Springtime in the Bronx

Posted by Carolina Soto in Graduate Admissions on May 15, 2017

Spring feels like freedom. Once spring is done with the dreary, watery days of April and the sun emerges (most days) in May - I love it. My students do too. The warmer weather, soothing breezes and infinite blue skies re-energize us with a luminous optimism veiled in mirth.

Although the city never sleeps, it comes alive with vibrant energy when the days allow for outdoor excursions. The Bronx is no different. A tour of the borough is just what spring calls for.

NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN

I feel like I always start my lists with this place— because really it’s a gem sown in concrete. Go!

My husband and I were recently there for a blown glass art exhibit by Dale Chihuly - in spring and summer, color wakes up.

CITY ISLAND, NY.

One of the most relaxing locations in the Bronx, enjoy breezes imbued of salt air while touring the scenic small island on a day trip. Fall in love with the wide variety of delicious fresh seafood, perfectly seasoned and cooked - honed by time.

LITTLE ITALY, ARTHUR AVENUE

I live about 15 minutes from Little Italy. The first time I went, I felt like it was a world away. There is an old time charm characterized by European-influenced streets and architecture transporting you through both time and space. It’s as quiet, romantic, and slow-paced as the Bronx gets.

BRONX RIVER BIKE TOUR

Although this is a very specific activity and it only incorporates a small stretch of the Bronx, biking along any scenic route during spring provides an efficient and dreamy way to take it all in. The Bronx is the only borough providing wildish, unadulterated land along several rivers including the Hudson, Harlem and Bronx rivers. The Bronx connects to the New York mainland, opening up into Westchester County and beyond, where this tour will lead you. With rich flowers and foliage alongside the lapping sounds of a winding river, both invigoration and relaxation easily combine. As the weather changes, outdoor activities add to a tableau of idyllic warmer months.

YANKEE STADIUM

Classic springtime wouldn’t be the same without a ball game or two. Catch a game at the iconic stadium and witness a fragment of New York tradition nestled in the Bronx.
