The Family Center's Infant-Toddler Parent Playgroups

About Our Groups

The first three years of life are a critical period in children’s development. It is also a time in caregivers’ lives of enormous change—and sometimes isolation. Our groups provide an inclusive and culturally sensitive community for all participants. We offer expert advice and one-to-one coaching on a variety of developmental themes, including, but not limited to:

  • Sleep
  • Behavior
  • Transitions
  • Developmental milestones
  • Preschool & childcare selection and application process
  • Caregiver self-care

My Grownup & Me!

Being a new parent can be an exciting and overwhelming time. Find a supportive community for you and your young child at our My Grownup & Me! playgroups! These groups offer a unique opportunity for infants and toddlers (ages 6 months – 3 years) to explore a variety of materials that engage their senses and ignite their curiosity in the company of their peers and parents. The groups are facilitated by an early childhood educator and a social worker—both with extensive experience in infant-toddler development and family support.

Developmental Variations

Our Developmental Variations playgroups meet an important need for families of very young children with special needs. This group provides both parents and children the opportunity to engage in play-based experiences that support each child’s social, emotional, and cognitive learning.

These groups also give parents the time and space to meet alone with other parents—with the support of a social worker—to voice their thoughts and feelings and to share resources. This shared time together with other adults provides parents with the nurturing and support they need to meet specific challenges as parents.

This group is exclusively for children receiving early intervention services either privately or through the Department of Health.

Words from Parents

My Grownup and Me!

"Our hour commute by train from Brooklyn to the Upper West Side fell to the wayside as a hardship in comparison to how much we looked forward to our Friday Playgroup. From all that I have learned thus far about classes offered throughout the city, in Manhattan and Brooklyn, nothing exists at the level of what is happening at Bank Street." – Allie

Developmental Variations

"It is incredibly refreshing to be in a situation where the questions and focus are not about where my child is delayed or what is wrong with him, but rather a focus on watching him explore new things and an excitement when he shows progress in small and big ways." – Rebecca & John

"My daughter has Down Syndrome and was born with dislocated knees. Having this playgroup has been amazing for her! Watching her get excited when her teacher builds a block tower and then crawling quickly over to knock it down always warms up my heart! I am a single parent in my 20s. Having other parents to share stories and thoughts with has been extraordinary. We share everything in our parents’ group, and I am so glad I have access to these amazing families and professionals." – Larissa
