Degree Programs

These programs are designed for students enrolled at Purchase College, The State University of New York (Purchase College, SUNY). Eligible students are those who have taken specified courses as undergraduates. The 20 credits earned for the courses taken at Purchase College, SUNY may count towards the completion of 10 Master’s degree credits. This plan of study will save you both graduate tuition and time in the masters degree program!

  • Early Childhood General Education

    Master of Science in Education, 35 Credits

    • Learn from core graduate faculty mentors who are master teachers
    • Learn to carefully observe children to guide and inform your teaching

    The Early Childhood General Education program prepares you to work with young children as a teacher who deeply understands children, who can create exciting and responsive curricula, and who has strong skills in working with colleagues and families.

    In this program, you will learn to develop age-appropriate curricula that encourage children to follow their own curiosity and forge their own paths of learning. Through fieldwork and course work, you will integrate theory and practice, building a sound foundation in human development, subject matter pedagogy, and the historical, philosophical, and cultural contexts of contemporary education.

    • Ages: birth through grade 2
    • No prior certification required
    • Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement may be completed as a full-time assistant or head teacher, or in three early childhood classroom settings (up through age 8) as a student teacher.
    • When you graduate and complete all certification requirements, you will be eligible for New York State initial certification at the early childhood (birth through grade 2) level. After teaching for three years, you will be eligible for professional certification.

  • Early Childhood Special & General Education

    Master of Science in Education, 40-43 credits

    • Learn to meaningfully engage young children of varying development and need
    • Become certified in teaching students with disabilities

    The Early Childhood Special and General Education program will provide you with the understanding and skill to work with young children in the full range of development in general, inclusive or special education settings (PreK, Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade). You will engage diverse learners in active, experiential learning, meeting their needs by building on children's strengths and interests while addressing their challenges.

    You will learn to understand the relationships among culture, language, and learning in families. Bank Street's interdisciplinary approach and developmental-interaction philosophy will enable you to support growth and learning of the whole child in the context of family and community.

    • Ages: birth through grade 2
    • No prior certification required
    • Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement: Work in classroom general, special, and inclusive settings across the early childhood range as a full-time assistant, head teacher, or student teacher.
    • When you graduate and complete all certification requirements, you will be eligible for New York State initial certification in Early Childhood General Education and in Teaching Students with Disabilities, birth through grade 2. After teaching for three years you will be eligible for professional certification.

    The Cross-Age Program: Early Childhood and Childhood General Education prepares you to work with children across the broad age range of pre-school through 6th grade. You will become a teacher who deeply understands children, who can create exciting and responsive curricula, and who has strong skills in working with colleagues and families.

    You will discover that classrooms are exciting places where children learn best when they are engaged in exploring the wonder of the world around them. Through fieldwork and coursework, you will integrate theory and practice, building a sound foundation in human development, subject matter pedagogy, and the historical, philosophical and cultural contexts of contemporary education. Most importantly, you will learn about the wonderful mix of excitement and security that a sensitive and imaginative educator brings to the classroom and how it can launch children on a lifetime of learning.

    • Ages: birth through grade 6
    • No prior certification required
    • Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement: As a student teacher, you will be assigned to four placements matched to your learning interests and needs in excellent public, independent and charter school classrooms.
    • When you graduate, you will be eligible for initial New York State certification in Early Childhood General Education (birth - grade 2) and in Childhood General Education (grades 1 - 6). After teaching for three years, you will be eligible for professional certification in both areas.

  • Childhood General Education

    Master of Science in Education, 35 Credits

    • Develop creative ways to help children become active, engaged learners
    • Earn certification in Childhood General Education for grades 1 through 6

    The Childhood General Education program prepares you to work with children in 1st through 6th grade. You will become a teacher who deeply understands children, can create exciting responsive curricula, and has strong skills in working with colleagues and families.

    Classrooms are exciting places where children learn best when they are engaged in exploring the wonder of the world around them. The wonderful mix of excitement and security that a sensitive and imaginative educator brings can launch children on a lifetime of learning. Both fieldwork and coursework will support you to become an educator who integrates theory and practice by providing you with a sound foundation in human development, subject matter pedagogy, and the historical, philosophical and cultural contexts of contemporary education

    • Ages: grades 1 through 6
    • No prior certification required
    • Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement: Work in an elementary classroom (grades 1-6) as a full-time assistant or head teacher, or in three classroom settings as a student teacher (3 full days each week).
    • When you graduate, you will be eligible for New York State initial certification in Childhood General Education, grades 1 through 6.

Application Process

To be considered for this program, you must submit your application and all supplemental pieces by April 1st of your junior year at SUNY Purchase.

Applications are considered complete upon receipt of the following:

After You Apply

Interviews
Competitive applicants will be contacted by a faculty member to schedule an interview. Occasionally, at the discretion of the program, applicants who live at a distance from the College may be able to interview by phone or Skype instead of in person.

Admissions Decisions
Admissions decisions will be made within 4-8 weeks after an application is complete. Students who meet admission criteria may be offered provisional acceptance pending completion of the undergraduate degree.  Upon graduation from SUNY Purchase, you will be required to submit your official transcript showing degree conferral and GPA requirements to receive full admission to the program.
