Global Classroom Graduate Internship: Fall 2014

Duration: One – Two Semesters

One To WorldOne To World, a not-for-profit educational organization offering programs to New York City’s 50,000 international students and scholars, is seeking a graduate student intern studying Education or International Education for the 2014 Fall semester (with the possibility of continuing into the Spring semester.) The intern will assist in various facets of One To World’s Global Classroom program, in which trained international college and graduate students (“Global Guides”) design and lead cross-cultural workshops in K-12 schools and after-school programs throughout New York City. Global Classroom’s curriculum-based workshops are creative, engaging and globally-focused. Workshops address topics such as environmental issues, global citizenship, careers, social and political conflicts, recreation & the arts, teen life, as well as national, cultural and personal identity. For youth, Global Classroom workshops expand their knowledge of global issues, strengthen their global competency, as well as reduce the potential for misunderstanding and conflict based on racial, ethnic, and cultural differences. School credit available.

Qualifications

  • Teaching experience (formal or informal education)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, cross-cultural)
  • Interest or experience in global education for K-12 students
  • Responsible self-starter; reliable, independent worker
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Social Media)
  • Experience in New York City schools and after-school programs a plus
  • Knowledge of New York City, including outer boroughs a plus

Responsibilities

To assist Global Classroom staff in the following functions:

  • Co-facilitate Global Classroom programs at K-12 schools and afterschool programs including teaching, program development, and classroom management
  • Assist in supporting speakers from a range of cultures with differing English levels as they develop and implement their workshops
  • Program documentation and evaluation
  • Communicate with and provide support to international speakers (“Global Guides”)
  • Co-lead occasional trainings and activities; some weekends

Hours

12 -15 hours per week (flexible) September through January 2014 (approximately). On-site internship supervisor provided.
