Community Building Strategies
Learning how to work together is a lot of work...
Teaching children to work together and resolve conflicts is critical if we are to build a community of learners.
- In the beginning of the year, I use children's literature to teach conflict resolution strategies. We identify conflicts in the story plots and discuss how the characters resolved the problem. Children soon learn how to apply these strategies to their own conflicts when they arise in the classroom.
- We also have many discussions about how we want our class to be and what we need to do to make it that way. These discussions enable the children to develop our classrooms rules. When children can articulate and decide together on a few simple rules, they are better able to understand and follow the rules.
