Fingerprinting For Supervised Fieldwork (New York City Requirements)

Please follow these important directions for the New York City Department of Education (DOE) procedure for fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is required for everyone who works with children in New York City DOE schools. It is also a requirement for New York State certification. The DOE identifies any teacher working towards certification as a “student teacher.”

Even if you have been fingerprinted by the NYC Board of Health or NYC Department of Investigation, you will need to be fingerprinted again, as the fingerprints cannot be transferred to the New York City Department of Education (DOE).

Step #1
The Registrar's Office will contact you to visit our office during designated timeframes, to get listed on our PETS (Personal Eligibility Tracking System) roster. You will need to bring your social security card and will provide the following information:

  • Full name
  • Birthdate
  • Phone number
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Placement Site

Once you complete Step #1, you will receive a nomination email and be required to complete all required steps to activate your account within 10 DAYS of receiving the nomination. If not completed within 10 days, your account will be deactivated and your nomination for student teaching will be withdrawn. You then have up to 30 days to get fingerprinted, but we recommend you get fingerprinted as soon as possible.

Step #2
Activate Your Applicant Gateway Account & Complete all Required Forms

After being added to a PETS roster, students will receive an email from the NYCDOE acknowledging they have been “nominated” for a position and asking them to register in the online Applicant Gateway system. You will be prompted to complete and submit required forms including the Fingerprint Referral Form which you will need to subsequently take to the DOE Walk-in Center, along with your I-9 verification documents (see list of acceptable ID).

If you have already been fingerprinted on behalf of the New York State Education Department (NYSED), you do not need to be fingerprinted again. In the Applicant Gateway, click complete any required forms under "Forms Requiring Action," then “Choose Fingerprint Form” and complete the OSPRA 103 form which you will subsequently need to take to the DOE Walk-in Center in person, along with your I-9 verification documents.

Step #3
Get Fingerprinted at HR Connect Walk-In Center

You must go to the HR Connect Fingerprinting Unit at 65 Court Street, Room 102 in Brooklyn for fingerprint processing. You will need to provide:

  • The printed Fingerprint Referral Form (if you have already been fingerprinted by NYSED you will need to submit the OSPRA 103 form)
  • A government-issued photo ID and your School ID. See list of acceptable ID.

  • The required fee of $135.00 by money order or personal check, made payable to  NYCDOE/DHR or by debit/credit card (except American Express).

Step #4
Register as a Student Teacher with the NYC Department of Ed.

All students planning to work in public NYC schools, and working towards certification, must register with the NYC Department of Education via the online registration system.

Visit https://nyc.teacherssupportnetwork.com/studentteacher to create a user account and complete your online registration. Please note, even if you have already created a user account to begin the full-time teacher application, you must still create a NEW user account to complete your student teacher registration

This system ONLY registers you for student teaching, you will use a different database for NY State certification purposes.

Please submit both personal information as well as your student teacher placement information as part of the registration process. If you do not know your placement information when you first create your user account, you can log back in at a later date to add your placement information.

Please contact your Program Director if you have not yet been informed about your Fall fieldwork placement.

Your host school principal or his/her representative will also ask to see your registration confirmation letter.

Please enter an active email address when registering, as the DOE frequently communicates with registered student teachers about the full-time application and hiring processes as well as other important information.
