Independent Study Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this information for?

The following information is for students completing their Integrative Master's Project (IMP) requirement through the Independent Study option. This information does not apply to any of the other IMP options. For more information about Integrative Master's Projects, please view the online IMP Guide.

How long do I have to complete my Independent Study?

Independent Studies should be completed within one year from the time of registration.

What do you mean by one year?

To know when your year allotment ends and your final work needs to be submitted to your mentor, please consult this list of start and end terms:
•    Fall starts will have until the end of the next Summer 2 term.
•    Summer starts will have until the end of the next Spring term.
•    Spring starts will have until the end of the next Fall term.

What if I’m planning on taking a break over the summer?

Participation in your Independent Study over the Summer terms is considered optional, but the Summer terms do count toward your one year limit.

I worked all year but I’m still not done. Now what?

If you work throughout the year and are unable to finish by your end term, you are entitled to one extension of one additional semester in order to complete you Independent Study without having to re-register and re-pay the IMP Fee in full.

I need this extension. How do I get it?

Submit an Independent Study Continuation Form to the Registrar’s Office and pay a $100 Continuation Fee by no later than the end of the Add/Drop period of your extension semester. If you do not complete your Independent Study by the end of this extension semester, you will need to register again and pay the full cost of another IMP Fee.

My year ends in the Spring, but I’m going to be away for the Summer. How can I get an extension?

Because of the shortened nature of the Summer terms, they won’t be counted as part of your extension. If the end of your Independent Study year is in Spring, you will be entitled to one full extension semester the following Fall. You must submit the Independent Study Continuation Form and pay $100 Continuation Fee by the end of the Fall term Add/Drop period.

What if I forget this whole process a year from now?

The Registrar’s Office will reach out to you via your Bank Street email account, when your year deadline is up. If you haven’t been given a final Pass grade by your mentor, we will remind you to turn in a Continuation Form, and will let you know the deadline by which it needs to be returned.

I worked all year, I’m not yet done, but I forgot to turn in my Continuation Form by the end of Add/Drop period. What happens now?

If you do not submit an Independent Study Continuation Form by the end of the Add/Drop period of your extension semester, you will be given a final grade of “IA” for your Independent Study (which stands for IMP Attempted – Not Completed). You will need to register again and pay in full for another IMP Fee.

I’m at the end of my extension semester, but I’m still not finished. Now what?

Students who exceed the additional extension period of one semester, will be given a final grade of “IA” (which stands for IMP Attempted – Not Completed). Students who receive this final grade will need to register again and pay in full for another IMP Fee.

My transcript shows I have a grade of NT or IA for my Independent Study. What does that mean?

After the first full-length semester (either Fall or Spring), we will reach out to your mentor to ensure that steady progress is being made. Students who are not in regular contact with their mentors are at risk of receiving a grade of “IA” (which stands for IMP Attempted – Not Completed) or “NT” (which stands for IMP Never Attempted). Either grade indicates that your IMP requirement has not been fulfilled. You will need to re-register and pay in full for another IMP fee.

I forgot to follow up with my mentor after I registered, but I’ve been working. Can I get my NT grade changed?

Students need to be in regular contact with their mentors in order to be making sufficient progress on their Independent Studies. If you receive a grade of NT, then it is an indication that you did not complete this important piece of your Independent Study. There can be no changes of grade for either grades of NT or IA. Once these grades have been posted, students will need to register again and pay in full for another IMP Fee.
