Leadership in the Arts: School Leadership with a Creative Writing Focus
A Collaborative Program with Sarah Lawrence College

Cathleen Wiggins, Director: 212-875-4529

Master of Science in Education: 42 credits
Sarah Lawrence College and Bank Street College of Education have designed this special master's degree program to meet the particular needs of elementary, English, and language arts teachers preparing for roles in supervision and school leadership.

During the month of July for three consecutive summers, graduate students take courses at both colleges. The program's 42 credits consist of 18 credits focused on your professional development in supervision and administration, 15 credits in the writing process, and 9 credits of supervised fieldwork/advisement.

Each summer you will have a combination of leadership seminars and discussion groups, along with reading and writing fiction and non-fiction. The leadership portion provides you with the knowledge and skill base you will need for the role of supervisor or administrator in your school or in community settings. The writing portion gives you a forum for expanding your writing skills and knowledge in creative writing, literary genres, expository writing, and the power of creativity in learning and leading.

Certification
The program leads to New York State School Building Leader certification. To be eligible for certification, students must also have completed three years of classroom teaching, nursery through twelfth grade. For students who hold initial teaching certification in New York State, the program also leads to New York State professional certification.

Students may take five additional credits in school district leadership (SDL) beyond the requirements for the School Building Leader (SBL) and be eligible for both SBL and SDL certifications. These five one-credit courses may be taken as electives within the basic Leadership for Educational Change program, or may be taken over-and-above SBL program requirements. To qualify for each certificate, candidates must pass the corresponding state assessment.

Supervised Fieldwork/Advisement
During the two intervening academic years, students engage in guided field assignments at their home sites. Through supervised fieldwork/advisement students practice leadership activities in their work settings and, with guidance, develop the ability to synthesize theory and practice.

Admissions Requirements
Most prospective graduate students are experienced elementary, English, or language arts teachers. Preference is given to those who have been teaching for at least two years. Our priority deadline for this program is April 1. After that date, applications are considered for that year only if space is available.

Life in New York
Sarah Lawrence College is in Bronxville just north of New York City; Bank Street College of Education is on 112th Street between Broadway and Riverside Drive on Manhattan's Upper West Side near Columbia University and Barnard College. The program arranges easy access between the two institutions and to cultural events. Bank Street College will arrange convenient housing at reasonable cost for our graduate students for the month of July.

Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Leadership in the Arts program with Bank Street and Sarah Lawrence may decide to continue as classroom teachers, but they will also have preparation to move into school leadership positions as public and private school principals, language arts program supervisors and administrators and department chairs. Those who have chosen to continue as teachers will find that this program has expanded their roles as leaders in their schools.
