K-12 Math Education

A strong math foundation prepares young people for a dynamic world and unlocks diverse career paths. The K-12 Math Education team at the Bank Street Education Center provides learning opportunities to help educators enrich their math instruction by blending skills and concepts with an understanding of each student’s development and identity.

Our approach focuses on the intersection between students, teachers, and content. We support teachers as facilitators who use big ideas, innovative strategies, and active learning to guide math growth.

We help every student access rich, grade-level math content by working with teachers to shift mindsets, build knowledge, and create inclusive, equitable learning environments.

Partnering with K-12 public schools, we assess strengths and challenges to tailor professional learning and coaching. By centering student voices, we drive meaningful change, close disparities, and promote confident, capable math learners.

We Believe…

  • Deep math learning is dependent on the interactions among students, teachers, and content
  • Teachers build content knowledge the same way students do – by doing
  • Math must be experienced through the lens of big ideas, strategies, and models

By shifting teacher mindsets, deepening their content knowledge, and enhancing their instructional approaches, we work to provide equitable math opportunities for all children and create inclusive math learning environments designed to cultivate confident and capable math learners.

High 5s Math Program

Our Work in Action
Bank Street is partnering with 20 community schools in New York City to implement High 5s, a game-based supplemental kindergarten math program designed to build on children’s natural developmental progression in math skills. Developed by the University of Michigan, High 5s provides instructors with curriculum and resources, professional development & ongoing support, the scope and sequence of activities, and weekly family notes.
What Our Partners Are Saying
I was able to engage both verbally and visually with my colleagues as well as members from other schools in the district. The experience taught me that when we collaborate as teachers, our learning is enhanced and we are then better able to teach our students.
