Design Works High School

Opening Fall 2023 – Apply Now for Ninth Grade

Students and teacher work on bike wheels

Design Works High School is a new public high school that promotes college and career readiness through real world experience. Co-designed by Pratt Institute and Bank Street College of Education through a planning grant from the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE), the school’s model will offer a progressive curriculum with hands-on learning experiences connected to design thinking, the arts, and social justice.

Design Works will welcome its first class of 9th grade students in Fall 2023. Students from all boroughs are welcome, with priority given to those who reside in Brooklyn. The school is grounded in an approach that values learning through relationships, which means that students can expect:

  • Project based and collaborative learning
  • Interaction with professionals and practitioners
  • Mentorships, internships, and apprenticeships
  • Experiential, hands-on learning
  • Relationship building and encouraging students to use their voice to impact their communities

The location of Design Works High School is to be determined. The NYCDOE is working to identify a site in Brooklyn that is accessible to the Pratt Institute, which is located in Community School District 13. The NYCDOE will issue a formal siting proposal for approval by the Panel for Educational Policy, as necessary.
