Why Centering Culture, Race, and Equity Matters

To truly transform student outcomes and challenge long-standing inequities, we must intentionally center culture, race, and equity in our educational practices. Systemic disparities continue to impact historically marginalized groups, and addressing them requires more than awareness—it requires action.

Research shows that Culturally Responsive Education leads to meaningful change:

  • Improved academic achievement across subjects like math, science, social studies, English language arts, and English as a second language (Saucedo & Jimenez, 2021).
  • Greater student engagement, motivation, and confidence—especially in academic discourse and standardized testing (Aronson & Laughter, 2016).
  • More equitable classrooms, where educators trained in bias, power, and privilege demonstrate reduced bias, increased empathy, and more culturally responsive behaviors (Devine, Forscher, Austin & Cox, 2012).

Culturally Responsive Education isn’t a trend—it’s a research-backed approach to creating inclusive, high-impact learning environments for all students.

We so often link or misunderstand the differences between race, nationality, and ethnicity. The workshop was thoroughly informative and explained beautifully. Great work by a great team. Looking forward to seeing you all again!

This work gives us the grounding to be able to start communicating things out to the community, to [translate] some of our learnings to the teachers, and to start really seeing more clearly some of the equity problems and issues in our school.
