This list contains books that received stars for outstanding merit in the 1998 -2002 editions of The Best Children's Books of the Year published by the Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College. The books on the list were all published between 1997 and 2001. We are pleased to offer this compilation as a free service and we hope that this list will be useful to you as you look for exciting and appealing suggestions for gifts for, or to read with, the young people in your life. Most of the books are likely to be available in your public or school library. They may also be available for purchase. We have used the originally listed price and ISBN information if the book is still available in that format. If the originally listed format is no longer in print, another available format (e.g. paperback, e-book, audio book) is given. Those books that are listed in the original hardcover format may also be available in paperback. Those titles that were out of print as of July 2004 are indicated with the letters "o.p." after the original publication date and publisher name.
