Bank Street Hosts Dr. Claude Steele for the Centennial Niemeyer Series

On May 23, Dr. Claude Steele, Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley, delivered a presentation titled “The Impact of Stereotypes, Identity, and Power in Institutional Culture” as part of the Bank Street’s Centennial Niemeyer Series. Dr. Steele came to Bank Street to help members of our community better understand stereotype threat and its role in academic environments.

Claude Steele gives a Niemeyer Series lecture at Bank StreetDr. Steele’s presentation was followed by a response from Dr. Valerie Purdie-Vaughns, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Columbia University and an instructor at Columbia Business School. Her research seeks to understand how stereotypes and biases affect motivation, learning, and performance, which mirror many of the concepts explored in Dr. Steele’s work.

The John H. Niemeyer Series comprises lectures and symposia focused on urgent matters of educational interest. The Series is dedicated to the memory of John H. Niemeyer for his leadership in helping Bank Street College become a national voice for children beyond practice and into policy.
