Occasional Paper Series

The Occasional Paper Series is a free, open-access journal and a worldwide forum for work that extends, deepens, and challenges the progressive legacy on which Bank Street College is built. The series seeks to promote discussion about what it means to educate in a democracy and to meet the interrelated demands of equity and excellence.

We are interested in research, practice, and policy-based papers from a broad array of theoretical perspectives. We encourage authors from within and outside the Bank Street community who employ either traditional or non-traditional representational strategies to submit their work for review. Each issue is themed.

Upcoming calls can be found below or through an inquiry to Gail Boldt, Senior Editor, at ops@bankstreet.edu.

Speculative Youth Action: Imagining Educational Futures Through Participatory Social Dreaming
Issue #53 of the Occasional Paper Series explores Speculative Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as a powerful method for young people to imagine beyond existing systems and take action toward more just, liberated, and community-rooted educational futures. Through moments of creative disruption, the contributors show how youth are not only researchers and advocates, but also visionaries shaping what education can become.
