About the Library

Library Policies

  • Personal Property: The Library is not liable for lost, stolen, or damaged personal items on the premises.
  • After-School Student Supervision Policy: Children under 10 years old may not be left unattended. 
    • School for Children students (10/11s and 11/12s) are permitted to work independently until 4:30 PM,
    • School for Children students (10/11s and 11/12s) must be accompanied and supervised by an adult after 4:30 PM,
    • School for Children students (12/13s and 13/14s) are permitted to work independently until 6:00 PM (refer to Section IV for full details).
  • Fire Alarm Procedure: During fire alarms or safety drills, all visitors must exit the building immediately or follow staff directions.
  • Behavior

    The following behaviors are not permitted:

    • Behavior that is unsafe, verbally or physically abusive, harassing, or threatening to Library users or staff.
    • Running in the Library.
    • Leaving books and other library materials on the floor.
    • Please return chairs to their proper place after use.
    • Behavior that damages or misuses the property of the Library or of other users.
    • Mutilating, damaging, or defacing any Library materials, including tampering with or changing configurations or software on Library computers or displacing, disabling, or unplugging Library equipment is prohibited.
    • Behavior that is prohibited by other rules or policies of the College or by other applicable laws.
  • Parents and Caregivers

    Parents and caregivers of School for Children students and Family Center children are welcome to come to the Library.

    • Parents and caregivers are subject to all library policies.
    • Children must be supervised at all times while inside the Library.

    Checking Out Books

    Parents of School for Children students and Family Center children should ask the Circulation Desk, 212-875-4455, to add a caregiver’s name to their child’s library record. To check out books, caregivers need to:

    • Show the circulation desk assistant their Bank Street ID
    • Tell the circulation assistant the parent’s name
  • Children & Library Use

    General

    After School Use by Children

    • Lower School students (9/10s and below) may use the Library after school only when accompanied and supervised by a parent, caregiver, or tutor.
    • After 4:30 PM, students in the 10/11s and 11/12s must also be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
    • Students enrolled in the School for Children in the 12/13s, and 13/14s are permitted to work independently in the Library until 6:00 PM.
  • Children & Computers
    • Computers in the Children’s Room are available for School for Children families.
    • Computers in the main room, on the south side of the Library, are for graduate and faculty use.
    • Adults with preschool and Lower School children must be engaged with their young children. Adults may not use the computers while the little ones play in the Children’s Room.
    • School for Children students may use the computers in the Children’s Room for educational purposes only.
  • Circulation
  • Food & Beverages
    • Food and drinks are permitted in designated areas of the library.
    • All garbage and table tops must be cleaned after snacking.
    • Absolutely no eating near the library computer workstations.
  • Noise
    • Cell phones may not be used in the Library. They may be used in the Library lobby only.
    • Zoom calls are only permitted in the library lobby and room 505A (room in the back of the library) if the room is empty.
    • Patrons engaging in loud conversations that are disruptive to other patrons will be asked to lower their voices or to move to the Library lobby.
    • Quiet conversations, tutoring, and small group work may be conducted at available tables in the Library. Exceptions are in room 505A , or at the Graduate School computers.
    • Patrons who do not comply may be asked to leave the Library.
  • Tutors & Tutoring
    • Library space for tutoring is available during library hours Monday – Friday.
    • Tutors may not tutor students in the Quiet Room/505A and at the Graduate School computers.
    • Space for tutoring is on a first-come first-served basis.
    • Tutors do not have free printing.
    • Tutors may not leave their materials in the Library.
    • Tutors may tutor only School for Children students in the Library.

    Caregivers & Babysitters

    Caregivers and babysitters who are providing help or tutoring must abide by the Tutors and Tutoring Policy.
