All Hands In Professional Development
Supporting Culturally Responsive Practice and Leadership in CBO Programs
Funded by the Flom Family Foundation, the All Hands In project is a collaboration between CCRE and two community-based organizations (CBO) in the South Bronx, BronxWorks and Highbridge Advisory Council Family Services. The All Hands In project aims to deepen practitioners’ understandings of culturally responsive, progressive, and sustainable practices to improve educational outcomes for children in the South Bronx. Participants include early childhood teachers, school-based staff, CBO administrators, family workers, community leaders, and the parents and/or caregivers of children BronxWorks and Highbridge serve.
The project includes four phases: Situational Assessments, Working Groups, the Professional Development Institute (Year 1), and Site-Based Projects (Year 2 and beyond). The situational assessment phase in the fall helps make the project personal and appropriate to each participating site. Working groups in the fall and winter allow All Hands In participants and CCRE staff to develop and refine the spring’s Professional Development Institute together.
The Institute is a space where participants begin to build and eventually implement goals and action plans that are culturally responsive and sustainable. Participants:
- Increase their cultural awareness by learning new things about themselves, their peers, and the communities they serve
- Reflect on attitudes and beliefs and directly address biases, stereotypes, and microaggressions
- Adjust their thinking to find new or re-energized inclinations to action and change
- Explore how to put culturally responsive practices, programs, and policies into practice
